National Peace Officer Memorial Day

National Police Week commemorated locally

PRESS RELEASE
May 15, 2023

Garfield County, CO – In 1962, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed May 15 as National Peace Officer Memorial Day, and the calendar week in which May 15 falls as National Police Week. This sixty-one year tradition was honored May 15 by Chief Funston and the Rifle Police Department. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) and Colorado River Fire Rescue (CRFR) provided a joint Honor Guard to post the colors.

Others in attendance included a contingency of troopers from the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), deputies from the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, officers from the Glenwood Springs Police Department, and officers from the Colorado Department of Corrections. There were about forty in attendance for this presentation. A recorded “live” video of the ceremony is posted on the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page.

National Police Week pays special recognition to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others, and was established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962.

Today these attendees remembered and honored law enforcement officers throughout our great nation who have made the supreme sacrifice in 2022 to protect and defend the people of our country, and once again pay special attention to those from our home state of Colorado. – Garfield County Sheriff’s Office
