Commissioners sign proclamation for Constitution Week
PRESS RELEASE
September 13, 2021
The Garfield County Board of County Commissioners has signed a proclamation honoring Constitution Week from Sept. 17 – 23. The proclamation urges all citizens to study the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American and all the associated rights and responsibilities.
Representing the Glenwood Springs chapter of the nonprofit Daughters of the American Revolution, Linda Morcom told the board that the proclamation commemorates the signing of the U.S. Constitution.
“This is to bring back the awareness of the Constitution and what it means to our country,” she said.
“I think it’s important for local governments, such as ours, to do things like this,” added Commissioner Mike Samson. “As an educator for 30 years at the high school and college levels, I taught government and political science classes. It makes me sad to say, but in those 30 years, and the years since then, it seems like I’ve seen a deterioration of people understanding and honoring the Constitution, or even reading it, and some who would like to trample on it.”
The signing of the proclamation was approved unanimously, 3-0.
