The Traveler provides accessible transportation for persons with an assessed inability to access any other transportation modes that exist in the designated service areas of Garfield County. The Traveler, which is managed and provided by the Roaring Fork transportation Authority (RFTA), offers wheelchair accessible, curb-to-curb, demand responsive, driver-assisted transportation to Garfield County residents. The RFTA senior and disability services can be found on the paratransit website.
Traveler serves qualified individuals within the following Garfield County service area parameters:
- Glenwood Base – A two-mile radius off of Highway 82 between Carbondale and New Castle.
- Rifle Base – A two-mile radius off of Interstate 70 between Battlement Mesa and New Castle.
Connecting or through rides between Glenwood Base and Rifle Base are available through RFTA Hogback, Bustang and Greyhound Service. Traveler can be scheduled to provide rides to stops for these three services.
Traveler service is not available within the Town of Parachute. For travel service within Parachute please contact the Parachute Area Transit System (PATS) at (970) 665-1151.
Hours and days of operation
Traveler operates Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding holidays observed by Garfield County.
To schedule a ride on any weekday on the Traveler, you must be an assessed rider and please remember to call at least 48 hours in advance. The hours of operation are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (970) 625-1366 or (970) 945-9117
Suggested client contribution: $2 per ride in town; $3 between towns. Drivers cannot make change, but can sell tickets for your ride.
When you call the Traveler, please have the following information available for the dispatcher:

- Pick up address
- Your destination address
- Appointment time
Cancellations: If you need to cancel a ride, please call as soon as possible. Your advance cancellation notice helps our program provide a ride to another person.
RFTA/City of Glenwood Springs and Town of Carbondale ADA Paratransit Service
Roaring Fork Transit Authority (RFTA) and the City of Glenwood Springs are providing complementary paratransit service for passengers with disabilities to individuals that reside within 3/4 of a mile of the “Ride Glenwood” or “The Circulator” fixed-route bus service within Glenwood Springs and within Carbondale.
This Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) complementary paratransit service is provided “for individuals that are unable to access the “Ride Glenwood” or “The Circulator” fixed-route buses due to a barrier created by physical, mental, or cognitive disability. Hours of operation for the paratransit are the same as currently maintained by the fixed-route buses. Currently there is no charge for this service.
To request access to the RFTA paratransit service, please call 970-384-4855 or 970-925-4482. Please be prepared to provide the following information to the dispatcher:
Your name, address, phone number(s) where you can be contacted, date of birth, a description of your “barrier” or disability, and the reason that your “barrier” or disability prevents you from accessing the “Ride Glenwood” fixed-route bus service. If you reach a recording when you call, please leave your name and a phone number where you can be reached and a staff member will return your call as soon as possible.
This service essentially extends the transportation options in Glenwood Springs and Carbondale currently offered by the Traveler service (see below) for seniors and individuals with disabilities. Coordination between RFTA and the Traveler will occur so that paratransit service requests are provided in the most efficient manner.
