Absinth wormwood
(Artemesia absinthium)
A long-lived perennial that looks and smells similar to sage, this plant is native to Eurasia. It has a large taproot and lateral roots that can reach 6 feet in length. It is a prolific seed producer that grows to a height of 2-4 feet. The stems are covered in fine hairs and the leaves are grayish green in color. Flowers are small and yellowish and form a long spike. This weed of rangeland and pastures prefers moist soils and is shade tolerant.
It is found most commonly in the 5,000- to 6,000-foot elevation range. It is common between Glenwood Springs and Carbondale, and has infested areas in Missouri Heights and Crystal Springs. It has also been found in South Canyon, Peach Valley and Rulison.
