August 6, 2014

GARFIELD COUNTY, CO – The fall grant cycle is underway and September 2 is the deadline for LiveWell Garfield County mini grant applications. LiveWell Garfield County will distribute awards of $500 to $5,000 as part of $40,000 in 2014 mini grant funding to qualified applicants.

The grants support local organizations, causes, projects and programs that support Healthy Eating and Active Living (HEAL). Organizations which work to create healthy eating and active living behaviors, increase healthy food consumption and activity levels for people living in our communities, encouraging worksite wellness programs, and engage schools and municipalities in upcoming events will qualify.

Preference will be given to projects that increase access and/or consumption of fruits and vegetables, and increase physical activity among residents, target schools or low-income populations, have a sustainability plan, have at least 50% matching funds, and/or are led by an active LiveWell Garfield County Steering or coalition member.

Grants awarded in May went to the Town of New Castle for a community garden, Growing Food Forward to partner with school districts for expanding gardening projects, Rifle Farmer’s Market “Lemonade Project” to sell freshly squeezed lemonade to give Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) tokens for farmers markets, RE-2 School District for its Recipe Overhaul program for school lunches, as well as to Fat City Farmers for garden and fruit tree planting, Grand Valley United Methodist Church’s Abundance Garden, the Family Visitor Program Eating Smart Being Active program, and Garfield CLEER Energy’s Bike and Walk to School Challenge.
