GARFIELD COUNTY, CO – Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) has named its first pilot communities for its new $25 million Inspire Initiative, and LiveWell Garfield County will receive a $75,000 grant. The goal of the Inspire Initiative is to get kids off the couch and out the door, from the backyard to the backcountry.

The Inspire Initiative is a new grant for 2015 from GOCO. The grant initiative is a five-year strategy aimed at inspiring Coloradans, particularly kids, to appreciate, enjoy and take care of the great outdoors. To make this initiative a success, the expertise and support of local community coalitions is important. The scope of the initiative invests in planning first, to provide communities time to solidify local coalitions, identify the barriers, gaps and opportunities unique to that community, and implement a community- and youth-driven process that reflects the diversity of the populations to be served.

The grant allows LiveWell Garfield County 18 months to develop a plan and then apply to GOCO for funding to implement the projects. The Garfield County Inspire workgroup, a subgroup of the already successful LiveWell Garfield County Steering Committee, will guide the process. The plan will identify projects in New Castle, Silt, Rifle, and Parachute that exemplify the strategy of the Inspire Initiative. The workgroup will focus on outreach to parents and community members to identify opportunities in current outdoor programming, environmental education, and outdoor play space.

Many community partners have already become involved in the GOCO Inspire Initiative grant, collaborating with LiveWell Garfield County. The initial core partners include Roaring Fork Outdoor Volunteers, Garfield County Public Library District, the Rifle State Park Complex, Fat City Farmers, and the Aspen Community Foundation – Cradle to Career Initiative. The Garfield County Inspire workgroup will reach out to community partners to solicit more involvement, as the project progresses over the next 18 months.
