Grizzly Creek Canyon trail work set to begin this week

Closure Order extended to protect public safety during construction

USFS PRESS RELEASE
July 29, 2024

Reconstruction work on Grizzly Creek and Jessie Weaver (No Name) trails in Glenwood Canyon will begin on Wednesday. The existing Grizzly Creek Canyon Area and Trail Closure has been extended to include the construction area.

This work will help repair damage from the catastrophic debris flows of 2021 and make the trails better able to handle future high water and debris. Work will include bridge replacements and trail reconstruction on both the Grizzly Creek and Jessie Weaver Trails to allow hikers to hike from one trailhead to the other, even during high water.

The previous trail closure two miles up the Grizzly Creek trail has been extended down to the picnic tables, which are about 0.3 miles from the trailhead. The previous closure of the Jessie Weaver Trail has been slightly extended to the first bridge, about 3 miles from its trailhead. The updated forest closure is available online.

The Grizzly Creek and Jessie Weaver Trail Reconstruction Project is being funded by City of Glenwood Springs, National Forest Foundation, and the USDA Forest Service, including Great American Outdoors Act funding.

“This work would not be possible without the gracious support of our partners,” said Rifle District Ranger Joe Fazzi. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to restore the connection between these two popular trails.”

Closure and project updates are available online or please visit or call the Rifle Ranger District at 970- 625-2371.
