Deputy Carter Hailey was dispatched to a citizen assist on Thursday, November 28, 2024 (Thanksgiving Day) at approximately 7:40 p.m. He arrived on scene a short time later and met with the reporting party. She advised him that her dog was stuck in the culvert and she could not get him out. She asked for assistance in digging her dog out from the culvert, as she was emotionally stressed-out.
Deputy Hailey asked for help from the responding firefighters who were on scene but were unable to since their power tools were too loud and frightened the dog. Deputy Hailey took it upon himself and dug tirelessly until he successfully got the dog out of the culvert. His response went beyond his normal duties and job expectations.
The dog’s owner called Sergeant Vasquez (the shift sergeant on duty) and advised him that she did not have words, to describe how amazing and helpful Deputy Hailey had been. She stated that she tried to give Deputy Hailey a cash reward but he politely refused.
Deputy Hailey’s actions exemplify the mission statement of the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office, “… to provide solutions for people through professional, ethical, and compassionate conduct.” The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office is proud to have a team of such outstanding men and women dedicated to serve our communities when needs arise.
