The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has again honored Garfield County in achieving the highest standards in accounting and financial reporting. The county’s comprehensive annual financial report for 2019 qualified for the GFOA’s Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

This marks the 12th straight year the county has earned such recognition. The certificate of achievement is awarded to a government, while the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement (AFRA) was presented to the Garfield County Finance Department.

“The financial audit is a six- to nine-month process, which starts late November and ends in July with a presentation to the Board of County Commissioners,” said Garfield County Finance Director Theresa Wagenman. “This is huge undertaking by staff whom I want to recognize and thank for all their hard work. The process goes beyond our department and involves all the elected offices, departments, administration, and our board. We sincerely appreciate the collaboration and efforts undertaken by all our stakeholders to continuously improve and ensure prudent stewardship of public resources.”

The GFOA noted that governments that have earned the certificate of achievement have “demonstrated a constructive ‘spirit of full disclosure’ to clearly communicate its financial story and motivated potential users and user groups to read the report.”

The finance department also received its ninth-straight Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting (CAFR) award in 2019 for its excellence in accounting principles in the spirit of transparency.
