The Garfield County Board of County Commissioners is celebrating Constitution Week, signing a proclamation at the board’s Sept. 16 remote meeting in Silt honoring our country’s defining document and the foundation of the republic. Commissioner Mike Samson read the proclamation aloud during the meeting.

“We urge all citizens to study the Constitution and reflect on the privilege of being an American and all the rights and responsibilities, which that privilege involves,” Samson read in the proclamation.

On Feb. 29, 1952, the U.S. Congress named Sept. 17 as Constitution Day, and a joint resolution made on August 2, 1956, proclaimed Sept. 17-23 of each year as Constitution Week. Linda Morcom, representing the Glenwood Springs chapter of the nonprofit Daughters of the American Revolution, encouraged others to read up on the U.S. Constitution.

“All of our chapters throughout the United States during this week are involved in some capacity in trying to increase the awareness of the Constitution and encouraging people to learn more about it,” Morcom told the board.

“If you have read it, read it again,” added Commissioner John Martin.

The signing of the proclamation was approved unanimously by the board, 3-0.
