‘Glenwood Gold’ may be spent at any participating Glenwood Springs business

Garfield County has approved a $50,000 matching grant toward an economic stimulus program designed to encourage visitors to shop Glenwood Springs businesses. The city of Glenwood Springs has also granted $50,000 toward the promotional campaign, which is already underway.

The Glenwood Gold stimulus plan offers $100 in “Glenwood Gold” to the first 1,000 visitors in town that book at least a two-night weekend stay in Glenwood Springs between July 1 and Sept. 30.

The campaign encourages visitors to spend some time and money in Glenwood Springs. The $100 can be spent like cash at any of the local participating businesses, a list of which can be found at glenwoodchamber.com/glenwoodgold-businesses. The business is then reimbursed for any redeemed Glenwood Gold within two weeks by the Glenwood Springs Chamber Resort Association.

“This helps advertise that Glenwood Springs is open for business,” said Commissioner Tom Jankovsky. “This will benefit both Glenwood and Garfield County immensely, and not just the larger tourist attractions, but also the hotel and motels, the restaurants and the small retailers. They really need those tourism dollars and the increased traffic.”

The strategy targets travelers who have visited Glenwood Springs in the past; engage with the city on social media; and anyone who had plans to visit Glenwood Springs, but had to cancel due to COVID-19, though anyone can apply for the program. Simply fill out the online form and claim the Glenwood Gold at the city’s visitor center, located at 802 Grand Ave.

“It’s really a comprehensive economic stimulus to the community and to the county,” said Lisa Langer, director of tourism promotion for the Glenwood chamber. “We’re hoping we get 1,000 people to book their stays and spend some money here.”

The grant, which comes out of the county’s general fund, was approved by the Board of County Commissioners unanimously, 3-0. More information can be found at glenwoodchamber.com/glenwoodgold.
