Garfield County approves $19,200 in discretionary grants

County search and rescue utilities, lease fully funded

GARFIELD COUNTY, CO – The Garfield County Board of County Commissioners have approved $19,200 in fourth-quarter discretionary grants to local nonprofit organizations. All told, seven nonprofits requested funding from the Discretionary Grant Fund this quarter, and $100,000 was available to nonprofits in 2018.

The Glenwood Springs Downtown Market was awarded $3,500 toward its 2018 Grand Holiday community event; The Silt Historical Society received $5,000 toward its historical park operations; KDNK radio was granted $4,200 for an effort to expand its Spanish language program; $1,500 went to Glenwood Springs’ Yampah Mountain High School’s (YMHS) experiential education program; and $5,000 was granted to business incubator GlenX to support programs in Glenwood Springs and Rifle.

An additional $6,000 was also allocated out of the county’s Educational Nonprofit Fund to two local schools. The BOCC granted $2,500 to the Colorado Mountain College non-traditional student scholarship fund, and another $3,500 to YMHS’s experiential education. The discretionary grants are offered quarterly, and each applicant is capped at $5,000. In 2019, $120,000 has been budgeted toward discretionary grants.

Search and Rescue receives funding Garfield County Search and Rescue will receive more than $41,000 toward operations from Garfield County. That amount covers the organization’s lease and utility costs at its home base near Rifle. The nonprofit operates under the authority of the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office. “Search and rescue does a great service for us,” said Commissioner John Martin in his support.

“It’s a value we receive from Garfield County Search and Rescue. If we had to man that ourselves, we would be adding 10 employees or more to our staff,” added Commissioner Tom Jankovsky. “I want to say thank you to Garfield County Search and Rescue for the work you do.”

All grant funding was approved unanimously, 3-0.
