Road closures during Grand Avenue Bridge girder installation

February 20, 21 and 22
 February 23, 27 and 28

Traffic detours and closures on Interstate 70, Sixth Street, and the Grand Avenue Bridge in Glenwood Springs will take place on weekdays from February 20 to March 1, while steel girders are placed as part of the new bridge project. The traffic closures are from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

Beginning Feb. 20, and running through to the morning of Feb. 23, all westbound I-70 traffic will be detoured onto east Sixth Street to the Exit 116 interchange to again access the interstate. Eastbound I-70 traffic will be unaffected during this time, but the Grand Avenue Bridge will be closed all three nights starting at 8 p.m.

The detours are necessary to ensure the safety of interstate users during crane operations to place steel girders for the new traffic bridge over I-70, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) said in a press release.

All I-70 traffic will be detoured from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., onto east Sixth Street February 23 through February 24, and again Monday evening, February 27 through the early morning of Wednesday, March 1.

"Both eastbound and westbound traffic will merge into a one-lane configuration and will be detoured through Sixth Street in Glenwood Springs via a break-in-barrier on I-70 near Yampah Vapor Caves," CDOT said. "The Grand Avenue Bridge will be closed during this time."

Eastbound I-70 traffic accessing Glenwood Springs, and State Highway 82 toward Aspen, should use Exit 114 in West Glenwood during this time. Westbound traffic heading toward Glenwood will exit at the I-70 break-in-barrier prior to Exit 116 and travel to West Glenwood.

"This is a large scope of work that will span more than two weeks," said Gaylen Stewart, construction manager for the project. "Our goal is to complete the work according to schedule, but if we experience wind speeds of more than 15 mph or bad weather, our schedule will be dynamic."

Erection of the steel girders, which are between 84 and 127 feet long, and weigh 81,000 to 121,000 pounds, started on February 15 in the Hot Springs Pool Parking Lot. Six of these girders are being placed by February 19.
