Discretionary grants awarded for first quarter
Garfield County fulfills more than $53,000 in overall grant requests

GARFIELD COUNTY, CO – More than $27,000 was awarded to local organizations out of the Garfield County Discretionary Grant Fund for the first quarter of 2018.

Recipients include The Glenwood Springs Historical Society ($5,000); Rifle Masonic Lodge ($5,000); Symphony in the Valley ($5,000); West Elk Trails ($2,500); the Northwest Colorado Cultural Heritage Program ($5,000); and the Bookcliffs Council on the Arts and Humanities ($5,000).

The Discretionary Grant awards are capped at $5,000, and $100,000 was budgeted for all of 2018. Organizations can apply for discretionary grant funds quarterly.

Grant requests from both Liberty Classical Academy ($4,000) and Preschool on Wheels ($5,000) were fulfilled from the Nonprofit General Education Fund. The Valley Senior Center requested a $7,200 matching grant, which was approved from the Nonprofit General Fund. Nonprofit grants are applied for on an annual basis.

YouthEntity was also awarded $10,000 from the Nonprofit General Fund. The organization, which promotes financial literacy in youth, served 2,600 students in 2017.

"This grant will help support children in Garfield County," said Heather Hicks, associate director for Youth Entity. "This will make an impact on our mission to make this the most financially literate region in the country, one student at a time."

The grants were approved unanimously, 3-0.
