Senior exemptions
2010-11 Senior Exemption law
Senate Bill 09-276 was signed into law in June of 2009. This affects all taxpayers who have been approved for the senior tax exemption. The legislature did not fund the senior exemption for tax year 2011. This is affecting the tax bill that you are receiving in February of 2012. Neither the assessor's office or the treasurer's office has any control over this legislation. If you wish to voice your opinion on this, please contact your legislator. The legislature will once again be looking at the funding of this exemption for tax year 2012, and the more voices they hear from, the better.
Senate Bill 10-190 – Senior and Veterans Exemptions
Senate Bill 10-190 was introduced on April 8, 2010, and would eliminate the Senior Exemption for tax years 2010 and 2011, payable in 2011 and 2012. The Veteran's Exemption will remain in effect for tax year 2010 and 2011. Regardless of whether Senate Bill 09-276 passes, your county assessor and the Colorado Division of Veterans Affairs will continue to process new applications for the exemption programs, and those who qualify for the first time in 2011 are encouraged to apply. If you or your spouse are 65 years of age and have occupied your home in Garfield County for 10 years as of January 1, 2011; please contact the assessor's office at 970-945-9134. You may be eligible for this exemption.
