SILT, Colo. – The Bureau of Land Management has temporarily closed the JQS Road north of Rifle, Colo., due to a rock slide.

The JQS Road is one of two public access routes to the top of the Roan Plateau. The second, Cow Creek Road off of Rio Blanco County Road 5, remains open.

The rock slide was discovered Thursday, close to the base of the plateau about 5 miles west of Colorado Highway 13, about halfway up to the top.

BLM engineers are expected to clear the rock slide by next week. Once the slide is cleared, the road will be reopened. The road is closed about 4 miles west of Highway 13 above Hubbard Mesa, and from the top of the Plateau where it meets the Rim Road.
