Individual sewage disposal systems
Approximately 5000 septic systems are currently in use at residences and businesses across Garfield County. In addition, the oil and gas industry generates many thousands of gallons of sewage per week from housing facilities and portable toilets on well pads. This huge volume of wastewater has overtaxed the facilities in the County that can receive this waste stream. In fact, the Garfield County landfill sewage lagoons reached their maximum capacity in the fall of 2008, forcing diversion of this waste stream to other facilities across the region.
Recently, Garfield County has embarked on a new ISDS reuse program that allows treated wastewater to be used for beneficial purposes such as irrigation, dust mitigation, and down-hole use. As a result this keeps more trucks off the road and opens up space at the landfill and municipalities.
