On November 10, 2010, the Garfield County Planning Commission adopted the Garfield County Comprehensive Plan 2030. The adoption of this plan was the culmination of more than 20 public meetings, stakeholder meetings, surveying, interviews, work by a Citizen's Advisory Committee and countless hours of work and review by the ten members of the Planning Commission since the commencement of the update in November 2009.

This plan builds upon previously adopted county plans, the most recent being a plan adopted in 2000 and other previous plans going back as far as 1968. As adopted, the Garfield County Comprehensive Plan 2030 provides a foundation for decisions and policies that will guide and direct the physical, social, economic and spatial development of the unincorporated areas of Garfield County.

It is designed to serve as a tool for citizens, staff and appointed and elected officials to respond to both the immediate and long-term needs of the community by identifying issues, goals, policies and potential strategies for action. As background, the State of Colorado requires counties to adopt comprehensive plans and encourages the development to be for the general purpose of "…guiding and accomplishing a coordinated and harmonious development of the relevant territory, which, in accordance with present and future needs and resources, will best promote the general welfare of the inhabitants."

The adopted Garfield County Comprehensive Plan 2030 is effective immediately.
