A public meeting on a draft ordinance that would establish off-highway vehicle routes, and regulate OHV operations in unincorporated Garfield County, is set for 8 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, in the County Commissioners meeting room.

Pipeline work along Harvey Gap Road
Harvey Gap Road
Crews have set new pipe to relocate an irrigation ditch near the Harvey Gap Road, and Garfield County has hired an engineering firm to assess soil conditions near a section of the road that collapsed in August.

September 9 - In the last week, the Northwest Interagency Fire Unit has responded to 34 fires. While there are no current fire restrictions in the area, fuels are dry and fire officials remind visitors to be careful with fire. press release-|

August 19 - The Bureau of Land Management will be improving wildlife habitat south of New Castle starting this week. The project will focus on a 270-acre area and work is slated for completion in September. BLM press release-|

July 29 - BLM takes next step toward resolving Thompson Divide issues
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) released the Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Friday. The BLM's Preferred Alternative in the Final EIS would cancel the 25 undeveloped leases within the area known as the Thompson Divide; apply new stipulations to the remaining leases that are not currently producing oil or gas; and make no or only minor adjustments for leases that are producing. July 28 - Stage 1 fire restrictions begin July 29 for Bureau of Land Management-administered lands in Garfield County. 

BLM will enforce these temporary restrictions:
•   campfires are only allowed within designated fire grates in developed campgrounds (i.e. a metal, in-ground containment structure -- fire pans and rock campfire rings are not acceptable)
•   no fires of any type including charcoal outside of developed areas
•   no smoking except within an enclosed vehicle or building, a developed recreation site or in a barren area free of vegetation
•   no use of explosive materials
•   no welding or operation of an acetylene or other similar torch with open flame except from an area that has been cleared of vegetation
•   no operation of any internal combustion engine without a spark arresting device properly installed and in working order

Fireworks are always prohibited on BLM, National Forest and National Park Service lands.
